BOOKS
All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
This book in particular, provides a two-way perspective of mental health through the lenses of it's two main characters, Theodore Finch and Violet Markey. Theodore Finch or Finch is a troubled teenager who was raised in a burning house, where his single mom raised all three of his siblings as his abusive dad moves on with a new family whereas the female protagonist, Violet Markey lives a completely opposite life raised lovingly by her parents alongside her deceased sister. They were both very sad people, for very different reasons and yet they both suffered from mental health issues. They both found comfort and solace in each other, and have a built-in home in one another and it was good…but all good things had to come to an end, does it not?

AUDIO & PODCASTS
Lets Talk About Mental Health. Ep 153 : Lets Talk About… Self Compasion
What really is self compassion. Self compassion is treating yourself with kindness, understanding and most importantly empathy especially whenever we fail at one point in life. Sympathy and pity can be negatively focused however empathy is more positive and focuses on understanding. We need to be aware that self pity is the opposite of self compassion. Hence, feeling sorry for yourself has no value as it keeps stuck in the negativity cycle. Instead of feeling sorry, we need to have some self compassion in order to put ourselves back up and stronger. We are only human after all, no humans are perfect, life does not come with instruction manuals but instead we have to learn and stumble around in order to walk successfully in life. Part of self compassion is that the learning never ends and that's okay because it's impossible to be perfect and we need to remember each time we’re making a mistake we are actually taking a necessary step towards learning. Therefore, since mistakes are part of how we learn, why are we so unkind to ourselves when we make one? If we choose to be kinder to ourselves and others when mistakes are made, we are contributing to shaping a better nation. Self compassion matters a lot because how you treat yourself directly shapes your mental wellbeing. If we are unkind to ourselves, insecurity, jealousy and self esteem will only build up. If we show ourselves some compassion and kindness, we are more likely in control of our own destiny.
